Abstract

A flange-based rail 1 (e.g. for mine railways) has an asymmetric head 2 providing both (a) a conventional head portion 10 for flanged wheels and (b) a wide running face 24 for rubber-tyred wheels, the asymmetric head forming on one side a deep channel 14 for receiving a derailment-preventing member, or a brake, of a vehicle. On the other side a conventional channel 22 can receive a fishplate in a tightly fitting manner. <IMAGE>
