Abstract

Earth formations are mined by a machine comprising an advanceable body 12, drive means mounted on the body 12, a rotatable carrier 14 driven by said motor means in one direction about its axis, and one or more cutterbit- carrying elements 18 so mounted on the carrier 14 as to be freely rotatable with respect thereto. The or each element 18 is freely rotatable about an axis parallel to the axis of rotation of the carrier 14. Engagement of an earth formation by the cutter bits causes each element 18 to rotate about its longitudinal axis in a direction that is reverse to that of the power driven carrier 14. <IMAGE>
