Abstract

Cellulosic pulp is prepared by mechanical working in a strongly alkaline aqueous solution containing OH ions in a concentration of 20 - 100 g/ l calculated as NaOH. This method can give a pulp in which the majority of the fibres consist of a multi-bent main stem having along its length branches consisting of bunches of fibrils; the length distribution of the fibres after beating to 80 Shopper-Riegler being such that at least 25 weight-% of the fibres will not pass through a sieve of mesh 50; and the majority of the fibres having a breadth between 10 and 100 mu m. Paper made from this pulp is particularly useful as a cigarette paper to give cigarettes with low tar formation.
