Abstract

Apparatus for the activated sludge culture of fish and/or other aquatic organisms comprises a channel for containing the organisms to be cultured, means (2) allowing discharge of effluent from said channel into a first and open receptacle (3), means (4) for aerating the contents of the first receptacle to produce circulation thereof, a port (12) connecting the first receptacle with a second, covered receptacle in which the effluent follows an extended path and the bottom of which communicates through an extended aperture with the lower portion of the first receptacle to allow the passage of sludge and a pump to circulate fluid from the end of the extended path opposite to said port back to the culture channel. A part of the extended path in the second receptacle may contain subdivided medium for the growth of denitrifying bacteria. Preferably the whole apparatus is circular in plan, with the culture channel and second receptacle surrounding the first receptacle. <IMAGE>
