Abstract

A process for the production of thioxanthones comprises reacting the corresponding o,o'-dihalogen- benzophenone with sulphur or with a metal sulphide or metalhydrosulphide with the proviso that when a metal sulphide or metalhydrosulphide is employed the reaction is carried out in a two-phase system in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst, and when the sulphur is employed the reaction is carried out in alkaline medium.
