Abstract
Apparatus for washing combustion gas comprises a tubular passage, suitably a venturi tube (44), a downstream-facing water spraying nozzle (47) at the combustion gas inlet portion of the tube to cool the gas and remove soot, a water receiving vessel (49) arranged against the outlet of the tube such that the gas flow from the tube contacts the water in the vessel producing a mist for further removal of soot and removal of sulphur dioxide from the gas, one or more inward flow volute passages (51, 58) which have holes (59, 60) to let in gas exhausted from the tube, several spray nozzles (61, 62, 63) arranged in said volute passage for further removal of sulphur dioxide and a chamber (64) for separating liquid from the treated gas. The apparatus may be incorporated in the anti-explosive system of an oil tanker, flue gas from a boiler being treated and then fed to the oil storage tanks, means being provided to maintain a desired pressure of such gas in the tanks. <IMAGE>
