Abstract

A flat optical fibres telecommunications cable 1 comprises a plurality of optical fibres 2 and elongate reinforcing elements extending side-by-side lengthwise of the cable, and two synthetic polymeric tapes 4,5 between which the optical fibres and reinforcing elements are disposed, the two tapes being welded together but defining therebetween a plurality of ducts 8, at least one of the optical fibres being disposed loosely in each duct and following an undulating path which is longer than the duct. The reinforcing elements have a modulus of elasticity greater than the tapes and, in order to protect the optical fibres against elongation of the tapes with temperature increases, a thermal coefficient of expansion less than the tapes. <IMAGE>
