Abstract

A process for manufacturing sponge iron includes the steps of crushing iron-oxide-containing scales produced during hot-rolling of iron products, separating non- ferrous impurities from the scales magnetically and adding up to 3% by weight of powdered carbon to facilitate the subsequent formation of the crushed material into pellets. The pellets are heated in a reducing atmosphere to 650 DEG C for about one hour and to 900 DEG C to 1100 DEG C for a further hour and cooled, still in a reducing atmosphere, to form sponge iron.
