Abstract
In a method of cooling a reciprocating continuous casting mould for steel strands having side walls (2) with channels (3) flowed through by a cooling medium, the upper part of the side walls is less cooled than the rest, the cooling in the region of the side walls contacted by molten metal during reciprocation is retarded and thereby the maximum temperature in the mould is shifted in the upward direction by approximately the height of the reciprocating movement, and the surface temperature in the reciprocating region is kept constant. The cooling may be retarded by incorporating heaters 11, insulation spaces, or insulation materials into the mould wall. Defects in the strands are reduced. <IMAGE>
