Abstract
A method of examining a diamond or other solid object comprises placing the object in a medium such that the total X-ray absorption of the medium and the object is approximately uniform, exposing the object to X-rays and, optionally, recording the pattern of X-rays transmitted. By this means differences in thickness of the object are compensated for. Suitable media for use with diamonds are aqueous solutions of barium chloride or lead nitrate; or organic liquids.
