Abstract
In a method of manufacturing an optical cable element comprising a plastics tube in which an optical fibre and/or optical bundle is loosely housed, the tube is extruded about the optical fibre as it travels under a controlled tension in such a way that the internal diameter of the tube is greater than the diameter of the fibre. On emerging from the extruder the tube is drawn successively through preliminary cooling means which sets the tube material, heating means which causes the tube to shrink, and final cooling means which resets the material of the tube after lengthwise shrinkage has occurred. Shrinkage of the tube whilst the cable is in store is limited to an acceptable value.
