Abstract

The valve comprises a valve element 3, a valve seat 20, and spring means 16 biasing the valve element to the closed position. The valve element is carried by an axially movable control rod 5 which is releasably held against the pressure of the spring means by ball detent means comprising an abutment surface 5b on the control rod engageable by a plurality of balls 9 arranged around the path of travel of the control rod for limited radial movement under the influence of a rotary control ring 7 biased by a spring 12 into an operative position in which the balls are urged inwardly. Pneumatic or electric release means are provided for rapidly releasing the control rod by rotating the control ring out of its operative position. <IMAGE>
