Abstract

For horizontal casting, metal (Al or Al alloy) passes to mould(s) 34 from a vessel G or holding furnace, through tapered outlet(s) 1 and aligned opening(s) in disc plate(s) 30. The unit 27 which includes outlet(s) 1 may be integral with the plate(s) 30 and possibly with the mould(s). The cross-section of a plate opening is like a smiling mouth in outline, having narrowed ends if used for casting round ingots but with widened ends if used for rectangular-sectioned ingots. Its lower surface, together with a rounded rise of the lower surface of an outlet 1, is therefore of a curved saddle form Figure 2. <IMAGE>
