Grates.-The grate a of a gas producer acts as a flash boiler and is formed with channels b<1> connected to water supply pipes and openings are provided from the channels for the escape of steam into the fuel bed. The water is supplied by a pump, the diaphragm k of which is operated by the pressure variations in the pipe h supplying a gas engine, the pump chamber d being connected through non-return valves to water inlet and outlet pipes e, f. In a modification 'the pump is operated by the exhaust gases from the engine.
