Abstract

An emergency lighting system comprises a control unit 1 arranged to send continuous direct current or tone burst control signals to a plurality of lighting units 3. Each lighting unit 3 switches on one or more lights upon failure of a normal lighting system, switches off or to a low level of illumination the one or more lights during normal working of the normal lighting system, and switches on or off selectively the one or more lights according to continuous direct current or tone burst control signals received from the control unit 1 independently of the state of working of the normal lighting system, whereby the system can be made inoperative and can be tested. <IMAGE>
