Abstract

A flat knitting machine has a take-off device for enabling the knitted fabric (14) to be widened abruptly. The device has an insertion finger (5) which can be lowered on to part of a row of stitches and through the throat between the needle beds (11) to a point beyond the pulling means (12, 13) for applying a downward tension to the knitted fabric. After use the device is moved laterally to remove the insertion finger from the knitted fabric. The device can then be left in a standby position. <IMAGE>
