Abstract

A machine for applying labels 12 to a succession of articles 30 comprises a rotatable drum 20 having peripheral suction apertures 24 for holding labels to the surface of the drum as it rotates. The drum picks up labels supplied from a magazine 10 and delivers them for application to the moving articles. Flexible mask 40 wrapped around the drum has raised regions 22, corresponding approximately in size and shape to the labels, with apertures 35 in register with some of the suction apertures 24; the rest of the suction apertures 24 being covered by the mask. A variety of sizes and shapes of label can be accommodated by the same drum using different masks with appropriately located apertures. <IMAGE>
