Abstract

A burner for intermittently heating a chamber such as a gas converter is fuelled by two combustible gases of different calorific values in a variable quantity ratio and comprises an air chamber (4) containing two coaxial gas feed channels (6, 9), one for a high calorific value gas such as natural gas and the other for a low calorific value gas such as cleaned exhaust gas from an associated process, each feed channel being provided at its end with a respective group of radial distributor arms (8, 10). A swirl vane (11) is mounted on the outer feed channel (9) and is displaceable therealong by means of a linkage (12). During periods of non-use of the burner, it may be sealed off by closing a water cooled slide (3) across its mouth. <IMAGE>
