Abstract

A transfer mechanism for feeding workpieces to, and/or removing them from, a machine, such as a press, comprises an elongate feed member 2 which is linearly movable reciprocably between workpiece loading and unloading positions. The feed member is also rotatable about its longitudinal axis. Carried by and rotatable with the feed member are holder means 3 which releasably hold a workpiece eccentrically of the axis of rotation of the feed member for carrying the workpiece between the loading and unloading positions. The holder means 3, preferably comprising a mechanical hand, may pick up a workpiece in a first angular position whilst the feed member is in the loading position, turn by rotation of the feed member to a second angular position at which it supports the workpiece as the feed member is moved to the unloading position, and then turn back to the first angular position where it releases the workpiece. The linear travel and rotation of the feed member are preferably pneumatically controlled, as is operation of the holder means. Conveniently the feed member is tubular and has the pneumatic supply to the holder means taken through its bore. <IMAGE>
