Abstract

The invention relates to the preparation of rosin esters wherein a rosin is reacted with a polyhydric alcohol in the presence of an arylsulfonic acid catalyst introduced either initially or during the esterification reaction to effect substantially rapid completion of the overall reaction. In Examples tall oil rosin, gum rosin and wood rosin are reacted with pentaerythritol and with trimethylolethane in the presence of p-toluenesulfonic acid, benzene sulphonic acid and naphthalene sulphonic acid. Advantageously, the invention permits the production of oxygen-stable rosin-esters of good color and softening point.
