Abstract

Method and apparatus for the direct chill casting of non-ferrous metals (e.g. Al) comprising varying the chill depth of the mould independently of the level or quantity of liquid metal in the mould by relatively moving the mould and a "hot-top" which may be a sleeve 4 of refractory material during casting. Alternatively the chill depth is varied by introducing gas into the annular gap between the sleeve and the mould to force the metal downwards. When moving the mould, moving may be effected by a piston-cylinder arrangement. <IMAGE>
