Abstract
An electrical system and apparatus for the detection of the speed of a moving railway vehicle includes in one embodiment a rotor (1) arranged to be driven from the axle of the vehicle the rotor (1) having alternate magnetic and non-magnetic portions (4, 5) arranged radially and arranged to rotate past a stator (2) separated from the rotor (1) by an air gap (3) and having primary (P1) and secondary (S1) windings wound thereon, the primary winding (P1) being supplied with alternating current at a first frequency considerably in excess of a second frequency derived from the passage of rotor (1) past the stator (2) to produce at the secondary winding (S1) of the stator (2) an output signal having the first frequency amplitude modulated at the second frequency which is proportional to the speed of the vehicle. In a second embodiment, the speed detector described above is used in conjunction with the speed detector described in Patent No. 1463761 <IMAGE>
