Abstract

A finned tube 1, Fig. 2 is disclosed together with a process and an apparatus for making the tube. The tube has T-shaped fins extending from the outer surface of the tube, the base 3 of the fins extending radially from the tube wall. The fins extend continuously and unbroken (e.g. helically) around the tube outer surface. The fin shape is formed progressively by rolling discs 8, Figs. 3, from a smooth tube 1'. During formation the fin edge is notched by rollers 13 arranged between the discs 8. Thereafter the notch is opened to a Y-shape by a bending roller 14 and then formed to the T-shape by a flattening roller 11. <IMAGE>
