Abstract
A pneumatic tire and wheel assembly contains within the tire cavity an insert for supporting the tire when deflated comprising cellular elastomeric material 20 of substantially closed-cell construction in which is incorporated at least one percent by weight of a fluid which at atmospheric pressure is vaporizable in the temperature range between 29 DEG C and 135 DEG C. The heat generated in deflated running of the tire causes the fluid to vaporize to expand the material 20. In the assembly of Figure 1 the material 20 is free to expand to fill the tire cavity on deflated running. Alternatively the cellular material may be confined in an envelope, which may be inflatable, and a lubricant may be provided to act between the envelope and the interior surface of the tire crown in deflated running. <IMAGE>
