Abstract

An expanding lid 20,110 for a waste receptacle 10,100. The waste receptacle 10,100 comprises a rim 16,106 having an upper edge 17,107 which defines an opening 18,118 through which waste can be inserted into the waste receptacle 10,100. The lid 20,110 comprises at least two lid members 22,24,112,114 pivotally attached to opposed portions of the rim 16,106, which are pivotable between an open position to permit access to the opening 18,118, and a closed position wherein the lid members 22,24,112,114 are disposed substantially adjacent to each other to close the opening 18,118. The waste receptacle 10,100 further comprises least two elongate, foldable side members 64,66,130,132 having opposed ends with a body therebetween, the ends of each side member 64,66,130,132 being pivotally attached between two lid members 22,24,112,114. The lid members 22,24,112,114 and side members 64,66,130,132 define a perimeter 142 about which a refuse sack may be located. When the lid members 22,24,112,114 move from the open position to the closed position, the side members 64,66,130,132 fold inwardly, and the length of the perimeter 142 stays substantially the same.
