Abstract

An electrical spark erosion machine in which a monitor distinguishes arcing from sparking by the incidence of open circuit. A gap between a workpiece 10 and a tool electrode 11 is servomechanically regulated and electrical pulses from a pulse generator 14 are fed to the gap. A capacitor C2 is charged to a voltage which closely approaches the peak open-circuit voltage by the said pulses which occur during open-circuit. If arcing occurs the capacitor discharges to a voltage less than that set by a zener diode ZD1 and a relay RL1 is deenergized; the retraction of the tool or the giving of an alarm is initiated thereby. <IMAGE>
