Abstract

In a steering gear assembly, a push rod (2) is mounted in a housing (1) to be capable of longitudinal displacement and is restrained from rotation by peg (14) engaging in a longitudinally extending straight groove (13) in the push rod. Rotatably mounted on the push rod (2) is a sleeve (5) which is restrained from longitudinal displacement in the housing and is rotatably driven by a bevel gear (9) on an input shaft (10) co-operating with a bevel gear (8) on the sleeve. Formed on the push rod (2) is a helical groove (15) the pitch of which is other than constant and a peg (16) on the sleeve (5) engages within the groove (15) so that upon rotation of the sleeve (5) relative movement induced between the peg (16) and groove (15) imparts longitudinal displacement to the push rod (2). The extent of longitudinal displacement of the rod (2) which is derived from each revolution of the sleeve (5) varies in accordance with the variations in the pitch of the helical channel (15) to provide a variable ratio for the gear assembly. <IMAGE>
