Abstract

A brake for hoists comprises a rigid frame 11, 12, 13, 13A surrounding a drum 10 to be braked, and at least two pairs of diametrically oppositely mounted braking pads on the frame, the pads being associated with braking units comprising a spring (54) to actuate the pads and having an inlet (63) for the supply of hydraulic pressure to overcome the spring (54). Equal actuating and relieving pressures are applied to all pads simultaneously. The frame may be formed by shoes 11, 12 interconnected by tie rod 13, 13A as in Figure 1, and it may be formed by ring-shaped plates (Figure 2). <IMAGE>
