Abstract

Waste fibres, such as wool carpet fibres, are converted into a useful lightweight resilient material, for such uses as loose-fill in packaging and cushion for soft furnishings, bedding and toys, using a short-fibre expansion machine 10 comprising a linear hollow body 15 into which is set a rotating blades assembly 20 driven by motor. Short fibre mass is introduced at one end of the body 15 to pass through and be expanded by the rotating blades 20, and be ejected through the other end of the tube. Any contained higher density particles 40 may become centrifugally ejected through an aperture 45, preferably with the assistance of simultaneously rotating vanes 50. The ejected material may then be exposed to a vibrating mesh to leave less contaminated expanded fibres 30 to pass through the aperture 45. The separation of particles during the expansion process means that materials such as waste carpet containing backing impurities may be utilised, so providing a cleaner low density commercial quality fibre mass.
