Abstract

A method is provided for disabling security tags 16 attached to items 20 for sale in a shop or store, to permit the items 20 being removed from the shop or store without triggering an alarm system. Disablement of a security tag 16 is initiated by means of a transmission of a signal from a cellular phone 10. The cellular phone 10 may communicate directly with the tag 16; with a tag disablement device 14; or with a computer 12 connected to a tag disablement device 14. The cellular phone 10 may communicate with a computer system 12 to complete a purchase transaction prior to disablement of the security tag 16 attached to the purchased item 20. The cellular phone 10 may read a bar code on an item 20 to be purchased and use data derived from the bar code to identify the purchased item.
