Abstract
An electrical generator 10 comprising an input 31 for receiving mechanical energy to be converted to electrical energy, a weight 20, a lifting mechanism 30 for lifting the weight using the input mechanical energy, a release mechanism 40 for releasing the lifted weight in incremental steps and a dynamo 60 driven by the energy released by the incremental steps to generate electrical energy. Preferably the release mechanism includes a pulley rotationally engaged to an escapement mechanism, where the escapement mechanism comprises a single pin escapement mechanism including a pendulum 41 that drives the dynamo. The generator may also comprise an elliptical regulator 50, which converts the movement of the pendulum into a rotational movement, and a freewheeling mechanism, such as a flywheel, which regulates the energy output from the elliptical regulator. A method of generating electrical energy is also claimed.
