Abstract
An artificial fireplace comprises a box 2 with an aperture 3, containing imaging means 4, a background image 5, fuel bed elements 7, 8 and an optical element 6. The optical element is a dichroic mirror and is set at an angle within the box; the semi transparent mirror 6 merges images of elements 4, 5, 7, 8 to give the illusion of a fire. The imaging means 4 is a screen or 3D monitor, displaying images of flames, located behind the mirror 6 and viewable through the aperture; a mask 15 reduces translucency around its edge. The background image 5 is in the boxs upper region and is reflected in the mirror 6. One fuel bed portion 7 is behind the mirror on a horizontal surface; a second fuel bed portion 8 is in the upper region of the box on a vertical surface and is reflected in the mirror. The fireplace has lights 10, 11, 12 activated by a controller 13; a speaker 14 provides an acoustic impression of a fire.
