Abstract

The antibiotics aplasmomycin, boromycin and acylated and hydrogenated derivatives thereof are administered to domestic ruminant animals, to promote their growth and feed efficiency. The disclosure also describes and exemplifies (a) compositions of the said antibiotics for administering to the ruminants; (b) a process for the production of aplasmomycin; and (c) analogs of aplasmomycin and boromycin, together with processes for their manufacture. The antibiotics modify rumen metabolism to increase propionate formation by decreasing methane and/or acetate formation.
