Abstract

A user device has two modems, each connected to a radio. One radio connects to a cellular network. The other connects to a non-cellular network. The radios are implemented as software defined radios, in which the baseband modem is implemented in firmware. To update one of the modems, a firmware update is downloaded to the device via one of the modems. The modem to be updated is then disabled and the firmware for the modem is updated. A temporary copy of the existing firmware may be made in the memory of the device. The update may be checked for transmission errors. The device may have separate baseband processors for each modem or may have a shared baseband processor with a separate part for each modem.
