Abstract

A tidal energy capture system has an off-shore docking component 103 with multiple docking stations 107, and is anchored or otherwise fixed not to drift with the tide. Buoyant tidal turbines 109 are moored to the docking stations 107. The Tidal turbines are mounted on supports with two hulls which are able to drift to align with the tide. A turbine such as a vertical axis rotor is located between the hulls. The hulls may be profiled to provide optimum flow to the rotor and there may be a base between the two hulls to provide a closed channel. There may be buoyancy components at the bases of the hulls, and the supporting structure may be of small waterplane area twin hull (SWATH) design. The turbines may be designed to look like boats to minimise visual intrusion.
