Abstract
In a method of filling the interstices of a multi-element flexible body, especially the core of a telecommunication cable, with a filling material such as petroleum jelly, a layer of paper or other insulating material is applied to the flexible body, the layer having throughout its length a plurality of discrete, mutually spaced areas of weakness. The covered flexible body is caused to pass through a chamber into which filling material is pumped under pressure such that filling material flows through the areas of weakness into the interstices of the body to fill the interstices. The areas of weakness are of such a form that substantial flow of filling material from the interstices through the areas to the exterior of the overlying layer is prevented. The overlying layer can be applied to the body in a process separate from the steps of filling the interstices and applying a waterproof sheath.
