Abstract

A positive displacement screw machine 100 comprising a casing 106 with a low-pressure port 116 and a high-pressure port 122 axially spaced apart, where the casing defines a first bore 126 and a second bore 128 that extend along respective first and second axes from the low pressure port to the high pressure port. There are first 102 and second 104 meshing helical lobed rotors arranged to contra-rotate within the respective first and second bores, where the first rotor has an outside diameter that tapers in a direction substantially parallel to the first axis moving from the low pressure port to the high pressure port, and the second rotor has a root diameter that tapers in a direction substantially parallel to the second axis moving from the high pressure port to the low pressure port. The root diameter of the first rotor and the outside diameter of the second rotor may be constant.
