Abstract
The present invention relates to a method of manipulating the physiological state of algae cultured in raceway ponds by altering one or more environmental parameter to simulate algal bloom forming conditions and to raceway ponds suitable for culturing algae according to the present invention. The parameters may be light intensity/wavelength ratio, nutrient balance/concentration, temperature, concentration/ratio of dissolved gasses, algal cell density. The depth of the raceway ponds may be non-uniform, resulting in a change of light intensity/wavelength ratio and/or a change in concentration/ratio of dissolved gases or algal cell density within the raceway pond. The method may comprise connecting a series of raceway ponds in which one or more may be open and one or more may be closed.
