Abstract

Means for throttling the exhaust gases from an internal combustion engine are disclosed. The means comprises at least one adiabatic engine, such as a turbo compressor, located in the engine air intake tract, a bypass route for bypassing the turbo compressor in the air intake tract which is opened at low temperatures to prevent the use of the turbo compressor causing freezing of the intake pipe. A motor/generator powered by the turbocharger is provided. At least one adiabatic engine, such as the turbo turbine, is located in the exhaust tract and the turbine acts as an exhaust throttle. The turbo turbine may act as a means for controlling the temperature and pressure in the air intake tract between the internal combustion engine and the adiabatic engine in the exhaust tract and a means for bypassing the turbine in the exhaust tract is also provided
