Abstract

A child safety seat (2, Figure 1) mountable in a motor vehicle at least partially defines a space (6, Figure 1) for a child 8. Seat 2 has a safety device comprising an inflatably-deployable shield 22 that in use at least partially covers the space and one or more, for example two or three, guides 24 guiding the deployment of shield 22. Shield 22 is preferably of a fire-retardant plastic material. Guides 24 may be pivotally mounted nestable arcuate hoops formed from PVC or other plastic. Undeployed shield 10 and guides 24 may be stored in a housing 20 within seat 2. Shield 22 preferably comprises a plurality of longitudinal inflatable chambers (30, Figure 3). In a collision, the seat provides protection against fire and debris and cushions the occupant against the impact force. Also provided is the safety device fittable to an existing child safety seat.
