Abstract
The invention relates to a method of cladding a metal substrate by build- up arc welding deposition using a consumable electrode wire or strip 6, in which method tendency for transverse plasma wind to blow away added metal powder at the weld zone is eliminated by presenting said metal powder in a paste form such as that, 4, laid over the substrate. In examples given the paste comprises finely divided metal particles in a viscous binder. As shown, arc-submerging flux 13 is fed to the weld zone by way of hoppers 12. In a specific example, mild steel is clad with an alloy of, in wt.%, 22.5 Cr, 7.5 W, 1.5 Si, 0.85 Mn, 3.5 C, balance Fe and impurity, said alloy being derived from a mild steel electrode and alloy constituents in the paste. <IMAGE>
