Abstract
The invention provides a process for the production of benzoyl cyanide which comprises reacting benzoyl chloride with an alkali metal cyanide at a temperature of from 50 to 160 DEG C in the presence of a carboxylic acid nitrile and a copper (I) salt, the benzoyl chloride being introduced first into the reaction vessel and the alkali metal cyanide being added to it at the reaction temperature. Preferably the benzoyl chloride is introduced in the form of a mixture with the carboxylic acid nitrile and the copper (I) salt is added together with the alkali metal cyanide.
