Abstract

A hydrolysed or solubilised protein is reacted with a fluorochemical compound containing a terminal aliphatic perfluorocarbon group of at least three carbon atoms to form a reaction product of which the aqueous solution is foamable, the resulting foam being useful for fighting fires on liquid hydrocarbons and on water- miscible liquids. For producing a fire- fighting foam, the reaction product usually will be mixed with fluorochemical and/or hydrocarbon surface active agents or added to conventional protein or fluoroprotein foam compositions. A preferred reaction product is that between hydrolysed collagen (gelatin) and a fluorochemical sulphonyl chloride wherein the perfluorocarbon group is a branched-chain perfluoroalkenyl group which is the residue of an oligomer of tetrafluoroethylene or hexafluoropropene.
