Abstract

A repository 1, for the receipt of submitted items, comprises a housing 3 that includes an internal storage compartment 13 for submitted items, a face of the housing having an inlet 7 into which items for submission can be inserted and a guide 11 provided within said housing 3 for guiding submitted items from inlet 7 to the storage compartment 13. A sensor 15 is located within the housing for detecting markers applied to items for submission, sensor 15 being operable in response to detection of a marker to generate a detection signal that includes information relating to the detected marker. A controller 17 is configured to receive detection signals from the sensor 15. The sensor 15 may be an optical sensor, such as a barcode reader, or an RFID tag reader to detect identification marks applied to items. Receipts may be printed when an item is deposited. More than one sensor 15 may be used to confirm that the item has been submitted. Sensor 15 may also be used to open a closure of the inlet 7. Preferably the items are coursework or homework submitted by students. A network of repositories 1 can communicate with a remote processor.
