Abstract

A solid fuel combustion appliance (101) incorporates a hopper (150) attached to the top of the appliance casing (102) and feeding through a port (156) to a combustion chamber (110). Between the port (156) and the grate (104) is disposed a metering device (160) in the form of a paddle (162) having pockets (170, 172) for sequentially receiving fuel batches from the hopper (150) for deposition on the grate (104) or on the firebed supported thereon. The front and rear refractory walls (117, 114) of the chamber (110) are grooved at (130, 132) and the passages defined thereby providing secondary air paths to the base of the firebed and to the undergrate region to enable secondary combustion of volatiles to take place. <IMAGE>
