Abstract

An improved signature handling apparatus includes a sheet transport assembly having a gripper carriage 28 which sequentially moves signatures 80 along a saddle 30 extending through a plurality of operating stations 24, 32, 40. During operation, a stationary signature eg. at 32, is engaged when the carriage is at zero velocity at the end of a return stroke and the beginning of a forward stroke. After the carriage has accelerated, it engages, eg. at 24, a signature which is moving along the saddle under the influence of an infeed conveyor 12. At this time the carriage and the signature are moving at the same speed so that there is no slippage between the carriage grippers and the moving signature. When the carriage is at an end of forward stroke and the beginning of return stroke position and has zero velocity, both of the signatures are released. The carriage preferably includes a pair of shuttle assemblies which are disposed on opposite sides of the saddle. Grippers on the shuttle assemblies are effective to engage opposite side sections of a pair of signature on the saddle. <IMAGE>
