Abstract

Apparatus for the selective detection of organic compounds containing hetero-atoms particularly of nitrogen compounds, comprises a flameless thermoionic detector. Sample substances passing through a reaction chamber 6, which is heated electrically e.g. by heater winding 7 to a temperature between 500 DEG and 700 DEG C, are heated and ionised with the co-operation of a selecting substance, preferably an alkali-metal compound. This selecting substance is located in a container 12, closed except for an outlet capillary tube, inside the reaction chamber 6 and is maintained at a temperature close to its melting point by the temperature prevailing in the reaction chamber. An elongate electrode 8 serves as an anode to receive the ions produced, the cathode of the electrode being the wall of the reaction chamber 6, or being formed as a cylinder adjacent to the wall. The electrical potential between anode and cathode amounts to less than 50V and acts also as the supply voltage for the electrical heating of the reaction chamber. The detector may be used as a flameless detector in gas- chromatographic testing devices. <IMAGE>
