Abstract

The apparatus comprises an elongate metal rail 6, mounted relative to a structural surface 3 on mountings 5 (26, fig 4) adapted to minimize transmission of vibration from the rail to the surface. The rail has an audio frequency actuator 8, preferably magnetostrictive, coupled thereto so as to induce vibrations in the rail in a direction normal to the said surface, and means for supplying audio fre­quency driving signals to the actuator. Acoustic vibrations in the rail 6 are coupled to panels or tiles 4 by screws 11, and so an audio signal is emitted. Several sections of rail may be joined together to form an elongate sound-emitting device. The apparatus is described as for use as a public address system in a railway station, either at railway platform edges or on walls.
