Abstract

A method of continuous culturing of microorganisms having a life cycle including a starting point and a productive point is carried out in an oscillating-flow tubular reactor on a continuous or semi-continuous basis. The microorganisms - preferably solvent-producing clostridia - and feed are introduced at (23) and (21) into the tubular reactor (1) at one end in a liquid medium which is caused to flow to the other end. The tube is long enough to allow what is in essence plug flow along its length, and the flow rate is determined so that the microorganisms reach their productive point substantially at the outlet end of the reactor. The solvents can then be extracted and the microorganisms returned to the starting point.
