Abstract

A 97.5 or more weight percent pure crystalline potassium chloride product formed by crystallization from a solution rich in both sodium chloride and potassium chloride, the crystalline potassium chloride containing a minor contaminating amount of sodium chloride, is reduced in sodium chloride content by contacting the crystals with an aqueous leaching solution, wherein the solute is potassium chloride or a mixture of potassium chloride and sodium chloride, the leaching solution being saturated with respect to potassium chloride and, when present, unsaturated with respect to sodium chloride, for a time sufficient to reduce substantially the sodium chloride content in the crystalline potassium chloride. Subsequently, the crystalline potassium chloride product having a reduced sodium chloride content is recovered from the leaching solution.
